Roaring Lions Volleyball Sweeps at La Roche

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Penn State Fayette's Roaring Lions defeated La Roche College 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-13) to capture the championship of the La Roche Volleyball Invitational on Saturday.

 

Coach Nancy Wheeler's squad defeated SUNY Old Westbury (25-16, 25-7, 25-9), Penn State DuBois (25-2, 25-7, 25-2) and Penn State Greater Allegheny (25-8, 25-5, 25-10) en route to the championship game by identical 3-0 scores.

 

Junior Leah Ambrosini (Connellsville, Pa.) led the Roaring Lions offensive attack in each match, tallying 44 kills throughout the day, including 17 against NCAA Division III member La Roche. Senior setter Katie Sleasman (Connellsville, Pa.) notched 59 assists in the 12 sets played by Fayette, including 20 and 19 against Greater Allegheny and La Roche, respectively.

 

Freshman setter Emily Konter (Brownsville, Pa.) added 42 assists, including 12 against La Roche, and four aces on the day, while sophomore Marney Hillen (Connellsville, Pa.) had six kills in each of the first three matches and three aces against Greater Allegheny. Sophomore Victoria Kearns (Uniontown, Pa.) had a career-high six service aces against DuBois, and freshman Emily Caldwell (Belle Vernon, Pa.) added a career-high five aces against Greater Allegheny.

 

Fayette improved to 6-1 on the year and next heads to Bethany College for a tri-match on Wednesday, September 7, at 6:00 p.m. where they will take on Chatham University, immediately followed by a match with Bethany.
