ELIZABETH, Pa. – The Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions women's volleyball team started the season in grand style, taking third place in the Penn State Greater Allegheny Invitational.
Coach Nancy Wheeler's squad defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny 3-0 in the consolation game. The Roaring Lions posted wins of 25-16, 25-6 and 25-8 to improve to 3-2 on the season.
All-time kills leader Leah Ambrosini (Connellsville, Pa.) led the way with 12 (of her tournament total of 54 kills) to go along with four service aces. 2011 PSUAC Freshman of the Year Janelle Cooper (Mt. Braddock, Pa.) added five kills while Emily Caldwell (Belle Vernon, Pa.) and Samantha Helmantoler (Monongahela, Pa.) each had four. Emily Konter (Brownsville, Pa.) had 31 (of her tournament total 108) assists.
The Roaring Lions were strong on the defensive side of the net as well, with Cooper and Katie Salisbury (Madison, Pa.) each having five blocks.
Fayette opened the competition on Aug. 31 with a 2-0 win over Penn State Beaver. Ambrosini led the way with 14 kills and Helmantoler and Cooper each added four. Cooper also had six digs. Konter had 17 assists.
Later that night, Fayette dropped a 2-0 decision to Marygrove College by scores of 24-26 and 17-25.
Ambrosini had 10 kills and Helmantoler added five. Konter chipped in with 17 assists while Cooper and Abbey Tirpak had six digs.
The Roaring Lions bounced back in the final match of the evening, defeating UC-Clermont 2-0 by scores of 25-17 and 25-19.
Again Ambrosini led the way with 10 kills and five service aces. Helmantoler added seven kills to go along with four assists. Caldwell chipped in with four kills while Konter notched 19 assists while Tirpak had six digs and Cooper five, to go along with three kills.
Fayette dropped its final game of pool play 2-0 to perennial power Rochester College by scores of 13-25 and 22-25. Konter dished out 24 assists while Ambrosini (8), Helmantoler (4), Caldwell (4) and Cooper (4) also had multiple kills. Salisbury was the defensive star at the net, notching five blocks.
