Volleyball Sweeps Beaver and GA

UNIONTOWN – The Roaring Lions continued their torrid play in PSUAC women's volleyball action, taking a pair of convincing 3-0 wins over Penn State Beaver and Penn State Greater Allegheny tonight at the Main Arena.

Fayette (16-5, 10-0) opened the evening by defeating  Beaver by scores of 25-9, 25-7 and 25-5.

Leah Ambrosini (Connellsville, Pa.) and Samantha Helmantoler (Monongahela, Pa.) led the offense. Ambrosini, the nation's leader in hitting percentage showed why, recording 10 kills in 13 attempts with no errors for a .846 hitting percentage. Helmantoler added 10 and Emily Caldwell (Belle Vernon, Pa.) added seven. Emily Konter (Brownsville, Pa.) ran the offense with 26 assists. She is currently fourth in the nation in assists per set at 8.09.

Konter added four service aces.

In the nightcap, Fayette downed Greater Allegheny by scores of 25-9, 25-9 and 25-13.

Fayette controlled the first set, jumping out to a 15-3 lead and never looking back. A 15-6 run in game two helped the Roaring Lions to the win.

Greater Allegheny showed life in the final game, jumping out to a 10-6 lead. Fayette closed out the set with a 15-7 run.

Ambrosini again led the way with 18 kills, Kaitlyn Salisbury (Madison, Pa.) added seven and Caldwell six. Konter dished out 28 assists. Janelle Cooper (Mount Braddock, Pa.) added four kills and three service aces.

Fayette returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 when it travels to Penn State New Kensington for a quad-match with Penn State Scranton and Penn State Wilkes Barre. First service is at 6 p.m.

The Roaring Lions host undefeated Penn College on Sunday, Oct. 14 at noon. Fayette will host Penn State Hazleton later in the day.

Fayette closes out its home season on Thursday, Oct. 18 when it hosts Penn State DuBois. There will be a Dig Pink theme to promote breast cancer awareness.
