Fayette Downs Hazleton, Will Face Penn For Championship Monday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – For the fifth consecutive year, the Roaring Lions will be playing for the PSUAC Women's Volleyball championship. Fayette qualified for the final with an impressive 3-0 semifinal victory over Penn State Hazleton on Oct. 28 at Rec Hall.

 

Coach Nancy Wheeler's squad won by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-14. Fayette got off to quick starts in both of the first two sets but started sluggishly in game three before a 7-0 run gave the Roaring Lions the lead for good.

 

Leah Ambrosini (Connellsville, Pa.), playing in her final conference tournament, led a potent Fayette offense with 14 kills. Emily Caldwell (Belle Vernon, Pa.) had nine, and Janelle Cooper (Mt. Braddock, Pa.) and Samantha Helmantoler (Monongahela, Pa.) each had eight Kaitlin Salisbury (Madison, Pa.) had five.

 

Sophomore Emily Konter notched an incredible 35 assists, while Cooper had 19 digs.

 

Fayette will face Penn College in the championship game on Oct. 29. Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, the start-time for the final has been moved up to 3 p.m.
