VB raises PSUAC banner, goes 3-0 over the weekend

The Penn State Fayette volleyball team had a huge weekend as it made a statement Saturday with a sweep of PSU DuBois and Carlow before downing PSU Shenango in three sets Sunday.

Prior to the Shanango win, Fayette raised the PSUAC championship banner in the gym.

"We wrapped up a great weekend as our team is slowly coming together and showing our ability to generate big plays," said Fayette coach Sam Swetz about the weekend before turning her attention to raising the banner. "There is nothing like playing on your own home court, especially when your banner is raised for winning the conference the previous year."

While happy with the performance Sunday, Swetz also went into detail about Saturday.

"We had a fantastic game day," Swetz said of her team's impressive showing. "The pieces are finally falling together as we would have hoped they would.

"Our team came out very strong for both games and I couldn't be happier."

In the opener, Fayette (6-1, 2-0) swept DuBois (25-20, 25-19, and 25-16) in the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) opener for both teams.

Siteri Tale (Uniontown/Laurel Highlands HS) led Fayette with 11 kills while Angel Buwawa (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands) added eight of her own.

Fayette, a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II team, followed with a 3-0 sweep over Carlow (25-17, 25-20, 25-18), a USCAA Division I team.

"We also had a history making moment by beating Carlow," Swetz said. "It was the first time ever."

Tale had 13 kills while Morgan Pytlak (Rillton, PA/Yough HS) had seven.

Machaela Hall (Fairchance, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) had 10 digs, Jadyn Barnish (Carmichaels, Carmichaels HS) had 20 assists and Justyne Howell (Hunker, PA/Southmoreland HS) tallied 17 assists of her own.

Fayette is home again on Wednesday when it hosts PSU Mont Alto in what is the team's second of four straight home matches.
