VB Wins 5 Set Thriller

The Penn State Fayette Volleyball team closed out the home portion of its schedule Thursday night with a thrilling 3-2 non-conference win over West Virginia University of Potomac (WVUP).

Fayette won the first two sets (25-13, 25-19) before WVUP (9-7) took the next two (24-26, 21-25).  In the fifth and final set, Fayette won 15-11 to earn the hard-fought win.

Head coach Sam Swetz spoke after the exciting outcome.

"As a coach, I couldn't be prouder to show off the depth of our roster tonight," she said. "Our future is extremely bright."

Kristina Aeschbacher (Carmichaels, PA/Carmichaels HS) had 15 kills, Angel Buwawa (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands HS) finished with 14 digs and 12 kills, Jadyn Barnish (Carmichaels, PA/Carmichaels HS) tallied 20 assists and four aces while Carissa Cyphert (Scottdale, PA/Southmoreland HS) had 11 digs.

Fayette closes out the regular season with a pair of Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) road contests.  Saturday, Fayette (10-8 overall, 5-5 PSUAC) is at Penn State Shenango (5-12, 3-8) with a 2 p.m. start.  It closes out the regular season Monday at Penn State New Kensington (1-12, 0-10) at 7 p.m.

Come Tuesday, Fayette will prepare for the PSUAC tournament as it enters as the fourth seed out of the West division.  It will head to the West division winner on Thursday for a quarterfinal matchup.  Penn State Mont Alto (16-5, 9-2) and Penn State DuBois (14-5, 9-2) are currently tied for first in the division with one match to go.  DuBois is at Penn State New Kensington (1-12, 0-10) Saturday while Mont Alto hosts Penn State Beaver (6-16, 3-8) Sunday.  If Mont Alto and DuBois finish tied for first at 10-2, Mont Alto will be the first seed as it swept DuBois this season.  Fayette split with Mont Alto while it was swept by DuBois.

In the event that both Mont Alto and DuBois lose this weekend, they would end in a three-way tie with Penn State Greater Allegheny (17-7, 9-3) atop the West division.
